Boot a Mac from a CD / DVD

After holding down C, nothing happened in terms of the CD drive spinning up, or any sign of it working, going back to the "flashing Mac and? Holding down Option on boot went into the boot manager screen. Nothing showed up in terms of bootable media. I went into Open Firmware again after this, and tried a multitude of commands. Is there anything major I'm missing here?

Heck, I even unplugged and re-plugged? That didn't help either, by the way. I'm pretty sure a retail copy of OS X I'm just getting kind of disappointed at this point.

This would be my first Mac and I want it to run as well as it could have if it were nice and fresh. Admittedly, no one throws out a computer because it works, but I had my hopes up a bit. I don't want to get rid of this machine either.

Does anyone else here in this sub think they can help me out with this? I'm at my wits' end. The optical drive I swapped in was a DVD drive, so it should have done something. Swapping jumpers and such did nothing to help, either.

MorphOS - Installation

That will tell you if it's the optical drive or the disc itself. It's still IDE and all. I'm not too familiar with the power Mac line, so pardon me for asking the obvious, are you sure it's a DVD drive and not a CD drive?
